Remember the saying about the journey of one 1000 miles... Why is the first step always the hardest? Because that first step requires change and change is scary. It isn't always rational, but it keeps us still. Newton said it best, "A body at rest will remain at rest unless an outside force act upon it." It is the same principle for all of us. Our comfort zone is where we will stay unless forced to do otherwise.
Fear of losing comfort helps keep us there. One tip is to make the change in increments.
If you are new to leadership, you have already started the process. But what should you do next? Here are some steps you may want to start with.
Get buy-in: Build Relationships: Take the time to get to know your team members on a personal level. Show genuine interest in their backgrounds, experiences, and aspirations. Building strong relationships will foster trust and make it easier for you to influence them positively.
Grow your team's capabilities: Support Professional Development: Show genuine interest in the growth and development of your team members. Offer opportunities for training, skill development, and advancement.
Each month exceed expectations: Establish Clear Goals and Expectations: Communicate your vision and the team's objectives clearly. Make sure each team member understands their role and responsibilities in achieving these goals. Setting expectations early on helps everyone align their efforts toward a common purpose.
Taking the first step towards leadership can be daunting, but it is essential if you want to make a difference. Remember, change is scary, but it is also necessary for growth. So don't be afraid to take that first step, even if it is small. As Eleanor Roosevelt said, "The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams."
Here are some additional tips for taking the first step toward becoming a great leader:
Set small, achievable goals. Don't try to change everything overnight. Instead, focus on making small, incremental changes that you can realistically achieve.
Be patient. It takes time to build trust and credibility as a leader. Don't expect to see results overnight.
Be persistent. Don't give up on your dreams, even when things get tough. Keep moving forward and eventually, you will achieve your goals.
Remember, the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. So, what are you waiting for? Take that first step today!
