Bad Boss 1

Bosses play a pivotal role in shaping our professional journeys. Great leaders inspire, motivate, and bring out the best in their teams. Unfortunately, at some point, we have all encountered "The Bad Boss". These are individuals whose leadership styles leave much to be desired, causing frustration, demotivation, and even stifling career growth.

Wait, are you a bad boss? Are you having a detrimental impact on your team and the overall work environment?

Let's look at 3 common traits that make a bad boss. Recognizing these traits in others can empower us to edit some of our own behavior, as well as help us to strive for better leadership in our workplaces.

  1. Bad Bosses often have bad communication skills. A bad boss may struggle to effectively communicate expectations, provide clear instructions, or offer constructive feedback. They may be unresponsive, dismissive, or inconsistent in their communication, leading to confusion and misunderstandings among employees.

  2. Bad Bosses often show a lack of support and guidance. A bad boss may fail to provide the necessary support, resources, and guidance for employees to succeed in their roles. They may be unavailable or unwilling to help employees overcome challenges or develop their skills, leaving employees feeling unsupported and unsure of how to perform their jobs effectively.

  3. Bad Bosses often do not have respect and appreciation for their team. A bad boss may show a lack of respect for their employees by demeaning or belittling them, disregarding their opinions, or taking credit for their work. They may fail to recognize and appreciate their employees' contributions, leading to feelings of undervaluation and demotivation.

Being a great leader of people requires humility, savvy, authenticity, and keen interpersonal skills. In his book, People Follow You, Jeb Blount makes a very important observation: As a leader you get paid for what your people do, not for what you do. Therefore you need your people more than they need you.
